Traditional learning and development models are based on a deep-seated and often unquestioned assumption – that individuals, families, communities, and societies function in linear ways. As a result, we plan a program, implement it, and expect our desired outcome to emerge. If – and more often, when – it doesn’t, we blame the materials, the training, or the people, change something, and try it again, often with the same results.
The work of Adaptive Patterns Consulting, specially the Complex Adaptive Learning model focuses on the learning process itself – the patterns of learning -- as much as the subject being taught. APC’s point of view is that is that the pattern of learning (“learning how to fish”) is ultimately more useful in this age of rapidly expanding knowledge and technology than the subject matter (“the fish”) being taught. Complex Adaptive Learning views the theory and practice of learning – whether by individuals, teams, functions, organizations, communities, or societies as a complex process – one governed by different principles than are typically associated with traditional training and development.
