My discussion with Steve proves that Russell giving the title COERCED INTO TEACHING DISTANCE LEARNING to this thread has pointed only to one side of the problem. The other side could be entitled COERCED INTO NOT TEACHING DISTANCE LEARNING. It happ...

Tad, your last message to me refused to be coerced in having "Reply to This" appear under it, so I'm replying here, hoping you will see it. You're right, I don't understand the complete dynamics of your situation:my mind apparently balks at follo...

Steve, you don't understand it or you rather don't want to understand it. Both I and students who decided to enroll themselves in the information security course ( http://triton.cs.put.poznan.pl/platon/files/opisyPrzedmiotow/ib_dzi/4/e101052134101...

Tad, do you still coerce your students into coming to campus, or are they free to avoid this distasteful obligation? And how about examinations? So many teachers coerce their students into doing such unpleasant work. I am enjoying learning to de...

It certainly is nice, Russell. I've noticed its look in particular. That elephant gives those people who grope it as rebuking look as I give those people who coerce me into teaching face-to-face only and, I suppose, as you give those people who co...

Steve---I did have the power to say "no" to teaching distance learning. However, that power was limited by the fact that 1. At the time I did not have tenure and 2. I did not know what the consequences of saying "no" would be. The pressures on ...

Steve, let me return to the saying "When you've got them by the balls, the hearts and minds will follow" quoted by Russell ( http://innovate-ideagora.ning.com/xn/detail/2216838:Comment:9631 ). Also in Poland they restrict themselves to telling abo...

Tad, do they teach children in Poland the story of the blind men and the elephant, each man seeing a different part of the elephant and thus describing the same animal differently? One way to "see" the situation is to pick out those elements that...

You are quite right, Steve. The worst educational situation happens when an academic loving face-to-face learning is coerced to organize for students studies at a distance and when an academic loving e-learning is coerced to continue only face-to-...

Yes. Russell, there are those with power and there are those subject to that power, and administrators, teachers, parents, officeholders, policemen and pastors all have power and can abuse that power. If that person lied that is another kind of da...

Steve--Yes, coercion can be for good, desirable reasons, as in the examples you give. I was admitting this in my last comment, or at least trying to admit it. But, it can also be used for evil purposes, or by someone because they have the power bu...

Russ, How do you feel about teachers who require students to attend class sessions when they would prefer not to come, require them to read textbooks without giving them a chance to refuse to do so, and require them to write papers they would rath...

Steve--You raise some interested points about "coercion." It is necessary, at times, for administrators to coerce employees into doing something they would rather not do. That said, there should be judgment employed, so that the administrator does...

Exactly, especially when we and our students take part in the real global group ( http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/ ). Chiefly because of that, I like asynchronous discussion much more than synchronous discussion.

Tad, this exchange points to one great advantage of asynchronous communication: you can teach at 8am, but if your lecture is asynchronous I can learn at 1pm.

Accompanied by such persons as Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson [Sunday morning coming down-Johnny Cash and Kris K ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddA0jNXBhqM )], I would teach at a distance enthusiastically even on Sundays at 8 am. :-)

Hi Russell,

With your interest in Ed Technology and Distance Learning, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording conducted by Nellie Deutsch on Technology Integration.
